Allan and Elliot Oakley's Visit Weeki Wachee
March Spring Break, 2004

State Rd. 50 is an appropriate path to Weeki Wachee. Leaving Clermont, the highway through Florida's bare midriff, a place where scruffy towns are little more then than names on green road signs It takes you back to a time and place where the mermaids swim just as they did in the 1940's.

-Weeki Wachee is an actual town that is 740 acres in size

-The crowds can be overwhelming

The Underwater Theatre:
Notice the curtain rod on the left was almost falling to the ground. The carpets worn down to the cement and pictures of their most recent celeb's to visit including Arthur Godfried and even Elvis.

With their bulky tails, the mermaids do not move with the grace of Ariel. Mind you it is not easy to maintain neutral buoyancy, fight the currents, smile at all times and locate air hoses while you lyp-sync to muffled music. All with the blurred vision of only a few feet.

-Naturally after being underwater for 20 minutes how couldn't you fall in love?

-Outside the theatre is an actual natural spring
where scuba divers frequent the springs

-Truth be told WW is actually a natural spring-fed park with sparkiling waters

-A haven for migrating sea birds

-There were more Ostriches then actual clients

Buccaneer Bay Water Park:

-As a way to appeal to a broader clientele Buccaneer Bay was opened

-When a beach was placed and water slides disturbed
the sediment the state tried to shut them down

-Spring break at its peak

-Clear waters and a 60f water temperature

-The mayor's residence and international head offices

-The Mayors Throne outside the Sweet Shop

-Lush flowers and gardens, sort of

-Discovery Point Amphitheatre

-Concerts are held here but only on the rarest
occasions and generally as fund raisers

Tranquility Trail:

-The gift Shop where they didn't sell post cards or videos
-When I asked why they said they had no money for them
